Summer is almost here, can you believe it? After almost a week of rain, yesterday was so pretty and sunny without a cloud in the sky. We couldn’t resist the pool anymore, and despite the freezing cold water, decided to just jump in. It was so much fun. We were all splashing around in the pool with our chocolate lab. It’s so nice to have a dog that loves the water so much.
After an afternoon of pool fun, what better treat for dinner than hamburgers? So I fired up the grill. I almost always make burgers the same way, either simply with a little salt and pepper, or I use one of those steak seasoning blends. I think when it comes to burgers, simple is always better.
But when it comes to the burger toppings, that’s when I like to change things up. So for yesterday’s burgers, I made my favorite burger topping, caramelized onions. Nothing to me makes the house smell as good as when your slowly caramelizing a couple of onions in the kitchen.
After I grilled up our burgers, I placed them on pretzel buns I had toasted on the grill and then piled on those juicy onions. For sauce, we just poured on a little steak sauce. Add a little lettuce and tomato and that’s it, burger perfection.
Yield: SERVES 4
Cowboy Burgers
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs ground chuck
- 1 red onion, sliced
- 1 sweet white onion, sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 pretzel rolls
- lettuce
- tomato
- salt and pepper, steak or grill seasoning
- steak sauce
Directions:
- Form ground beef into hamburger patties and season. Grill to desired doneness.
- Add onions to a large skillet with olive oil. Add a little salt and cook over medium-low heat, being careful to not burn the onions. Continue to cook until browned and very fragrant, about 30 minutes plus, depending on thickness of slices.
- Grill pretzel buns and assemble burgers. Pile on caramelized onions and pour on steak sauce. Serve.
