Sloppy Goblins Recipe

Sloppy Goblins Recipe

By Angela McGowan

When I went to the grocery store yesterday and passed through the bakery, these bright orange buns caught my attention. I thought for a while and remembered seeing this in a book a while ago, I can’t remember anything about the book except that it was a Halloween book. I just made the usual homemade sloppy joe meat and sauce, but with turkey, and then decorated the top of the buns like little goblins. They were alot of fun.

Yield: SERVES 4

Sloppy Goblins

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 green pepper, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced very fine
  • 1 clove garlic, diced
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons steak seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • kosher salt – but only if your steak seasoning is salt free
  • Hamburger buns – plain or brightly colored will look equally cute

Decorations:

  • toothpicks
  • Spanish Queen Pimento stuffed olives
  • Jumbo Black Olives
  • a red pepper
  • a green pepper
  • carrots
  • banana pepper rings
  • pretzel sticks
  • curly parsley

Directions:

1. Preheat large skillet. Drizzle with olive oil. Add ground meat to skillet. Add onions, bell pepper, carrot and garlic. Cook until meat has browned. Add tomato paste, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, honey and water. Add salt to taste if your steak seasoning is salt free.

2. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 15 – 20 minutes, or until very thick.

3. Assemble goblin faces as shown in photo. It is a little hard to see in the picture, but I used curly parsley for the hair on the goblin on the left. I used a paring knife to cut the veggies, and also used it to poke holes in the bread for the parsley and pretzel sticks. I used toothpicks to hold some of the face pieces on the bread.
