I have been in love with Chicago dogs since I first discovered them in an amazing local hot dog joint that specializes in the best Chicago dogs. Unfortunately, it’s clear on the other side of town, so when I don’t want to travel, I have some shortcuts to make one of my favorite treats at home.
Yield: Serves 4
How to Make Chicago Dogs at Home
Ingredients:
- Poppy seed hot dog buns
- All beef hot dogs
- Bright green sweet pickle relish, or any sweet relish
- chopped onion
- a crisp dill pickle spear
- sport peppers, serrano peppers, or tabasco peppers, pickled
- thin tomato wedges
- yellow mustard
- poppy seeds and olive oil spray if you have plain buns
- celery salt
Directions:
1. Cook hot dogs according to package directions.
2. If you were not able to get poppy seed buns, take your plain hot dog buns and place on a cookie sheet. Spray with olive oil spray and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Place under broiler for just a minute or two until buns are warm.
3. Top hot dog with toppings, sprinkle with celery salt and enjoy a little taste of “almost authentic” Chicago anywhere.
